One of the key factors in taking care of teens is allowing them to assume responsibility for their own health. Teens face enormous physical, social and emotional challenges as they transition into adulthood. Data from Arkansas suggest that teens have high rates of intentional and unintentional injury, obesity, smoking behaviors and pregnancy compared to the rest of the country. As a medical community, we have an opportunity to assist them in this difficult journey.
Not only do we encourage physicians to conduct a comprehensive evaluation (EPSDT) when a teen presents for an acute illness (Medicaid will pay for both an acute care and comprehensive claim during the same visit), but to make adolescent preventive services a component of the clinical practice.
Clinical components of a teen visit include:
- Delivery of health services
- Health guidance and promotion
- Appropriate screenings
- Immunizations
AFMC works to promote the health of adolescents and their access to comprehensive health care. To find out more, contact a Medicaid Quality Specialist.
